What is partner marketing?

Partner marketing is a collaborative go-to-market approach in which a vendor and its channel partners jointly plan, fund, and execute marketing campaigns to generate demand and pipeline for shared customers. It spans co-branded content, through-partner campaigns, and market development funds (MDF).

What to know
1

What it means

Partner marketing (also called channel marketing or through-channel marketing) is the practice of a brand marketing with, through, and for its partner ecosystem rather than only direct to end customers. 'Marketing with' means co-branded campaigns run jointly; 'marketing through' means the vendor supplies assets, MDF, and automation so partners run campaigns under their own brand (through-channel marketing automation, or TCMA); and 'marketing for' means the vendor generates leads and hands them to partners. The goal is to extend reach and pipeline through resellers, referral partners, distributors, MSPs, and system integrators who own trusted local relationships the vendor cannot reach directly.

2

Why it matters

For channel-led companies, partners can influence or source the majority of revenue, yet most partners lack the time, budget, or marketing skill to run campaigns on their own. Partner marketing closes that gap: it turns a passive reseller list into an active demand-generation network. Well-run programs increase partner-sourced pipeline, improve mindshare against competing vendors courting the same partners, and lower customer acquisition cost by leveraging partner audiences and credibility. Because partners market in their local language, vertical, and geography, campaigns convert better than generic vendor outreach.

3

How it works

A typical program combines: (1) a partner portal or PRM platform where partners access approved, co-branded assets; (2) through-channel marketing automation (TCMA) that lets partners launch email, social, and landing-page campaigns in a few clicks with their branding auto-applied; (3) MDF or co-op funds partners request to offset campaign costs; and (4) attribution reporting that ties partner activity back to leads and closed revenue. Example: a SaaS vendor uploads a webinar campaign to its portal; 40 partners syndicate it under their own logos, the platform captures the leads, and MDF reimburses the top performers based on pipeline generated.

Frequently asked questions

How is partner marketing different from affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a narrow, performance-only model where publishers earn a commission per referred sale. Partner marketing is broader and relationship-driven: it includes co-branded campaigns, MDF-funded demand generation, joint events, and enablement across resellers, MSPs, and integrators, not just a tracked referral link.

What is through-channel marketing automation (TCMA)?

TCMA is the technology layer of partner marketing. It lets vendors publish campaign templates that partners can personalize and launch under their own brand in minutes, while the vendor retains control of messaging and captures lead and attribution data centrally.
