What is a reseller partner?

A reseller partner is a company that purchases a vendor's products or licenses and resells them directly to end customers, frequently bundling implementation, support, or complementary services to add value.

What to know
1

What it means

Reseller partners own the customer relationship at the point of sale. They may buy from the vendor directly or through a distributor, then sell to businesses or consumers under a partner agreement. Value-added resellers (VARs) go further by layering integration, consulting, and managed services on top of the product. Resellers differ from referral partners, who only introduce a lead and hand the sale back to the vendor.

2

Why it matters

Resellers extend a vendor's sales force without the vendor carrying the headcount cost. They bring local market knowledge, existing customer trust, and the ability to solve a customer's whole problem rather than sell a single product. For many B2B and SaaS vendors, the reseller channel drives the majority of revenue because partners can reach mid-market and SMB segments that a direct team cannot economically cover.

3

How it works

A vendor recruits and onboards the reseller, sets discount tiers or margins, and often provides deal registration so the reseller can protect the deals it sources. The reseller markets the product, closes the sale, invoices the customer, and delivers first-line service. Example: an IT services firm resells a PRM platform to its mid-market clients, registers each deal to lock in margin, implements the software, and provides ongoing support billed on top of the license.

Related terms

Related terms include value-added reseller (VAR), distributor, deal registration, partner margin, channel program, and indirect sales. Resellers sit downstream of distributors in a two-tier model. Vendors manage resellers with a PRM platform that handles onboarding, deal registration, tiering, and co-selling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a reseller and a referral partner?

A reseller buys the product and sells it directly to the end customer, owning the transaction and often the ongoing relationship. A referral partner simply introduces a prospect to the vendor and earns a commission if the deal closes, without handling the sale itself.

What is a value-added reseller (VAR)?

A value-added reseller is a reseller that adds services such as integration, customization, consulting, or managed support on top of the vendor's product. VARs are common in IT, software, and hardware where customers need more than the product alone to get value.
