What is deal registration?

Deal registration is a channel-program process in which a partner submits a sales opportunity to the vendor to claim it — earning margin protection, discounts, and priority over other partners on that deal. It is the primary mechanism vendors use to reward partners for finding new business and to prevent channel conflict.

What to know
1

What it means

When a partner identifies a genuine opportunity, it 'registers' the deal with the vendor, typically through a partner portal. If approved, the vendor grants that partner exclusive or preferential rights to the deal for a set period, usually with a better discount or protected margin. This assures the partner that its prospecting effort will not be undercut by another partner or by the vendor's own direct sales team. Deal registration is one of the most important trust-building features of a channel program.

2

Why it matters

Without deal registration, partners have little incentive to invest in finding new business, because another reseller could swoop in and win the same customer on price. Registration protects the partner that did the work, which encourages partners to hunt for net-new opportunities rather than only fulfilling inbound orders. It also gives the vendor a real-time view of partner-sourced pipeline and is a key input to partner attribution. Clear, fast, and fair registration approval is a hallmark of a healthy program; slow or opaque approvals are a top partner complaint.

3

How it works / example

A reseller meets a prospect evaluating the vendor's software. It logs into the partner portal and registers the deal with company name, contact, deal size, and expected close date. The vendor's channel team reviews it against existing registrations and direct-sales activity, then approves it — locking in, say, a 20% margin for 90 days. The partner works the deal with that protection in place. Platforms such as xAmplify automate submission, deduplication against existing deals, approval workflows, and expiry, so registration is fast and disputes are minimized.

Deal registration is tightly linked to channel conflict (what it prevents), partner-sourced revenue and partner attribution (what it measures), partner tiering (which can affect registration benefits), and co-selling (which may follow an approved registration). It is a standard capability within PRM platforms.

Frequently asked questions

What does deal registration protect against?

It protects a partner's margin and priority on a specific opportunity, preventing other partners or the vendor's direct team from competing on the same deal and eroding the price. This is a primary defense against channel conflict.

How long does a registered deal stay protected?

Protection periods vary by program but commonly range from 60 to 120 days, often with the option to renew if the deal is still actively progressing. The exact terms are set by the vendor and enforced through the PRM system.
